Army Chief to visit Leh to take stock of ground situation

New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane will visit Leh to take stock of the ground situation. Army Chief Gen MM Naravane will visit Leh, headquarters of 14 Corps, on Tuesday for a security review of the sensitive Ladakh sector, where tensions have escalated after a clash between soldiers of the Indian Army and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Galwan Valley. He will also review the progress in talks with the Chinese military.

He will leave for Leh after attending a meeting with top generals who are in New Delhi for the Army Commanders Conference that ends on Tuesday. Operational issues that are expected to have been discussed at the Army Commanders’ Conference include the situation along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and the situation along the Line of Control with Pakistan and counter-terrorist operations in Kashmir. As per sources, the commanders discussed developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the army’s readiness to handle any situation.

The Army Commanders’ Conference is an apex level biannual event which facilitates conceptual level deliberations culminating in important policy decisions. The apex level leadership of Indian Army brainstorm on current emerging security and administrative challenges and chart the future course for Indian Army. To ensure due diligence, decisions are taken through collegiate system comprising Army commanders and senior officers. Army Commanders Conference is being held on June 22-23 to review the operational situation on both the northern and western fronts.

This meeting comes at a time when the tensions between India and China have escalated at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh after the violent face-off in Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred. Reports suggest Chinese Army also suffered casualties as more than 35 China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers died in the clash.
