Bengal Imams Association urges CM Mamata Banerjee to extend lockdown

Eid celebrations can wait: The Association of Imams said the decision should be taken in the interest of the state

Kolkata: The Bengal Imams’ Association, a body of Islamic clerics in the state, has urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to extend the lockdown in the state.

The Association of Imams has written to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to lift the lockdown before Eid Ul Fitr which is expected to be observed on May 25, under any circumstances in the wake of an increase in the number of novel coronavirus cases.

In a letter to the CM, the Chairman of the Bengal Imams’ Association wrote: “Let people survive first, festivities can wait.”

The Association of Imams also said that the decision should be taken in the interest of the state as that the Eid celebrations can wait.

“We request you to extend the lockdown at least till May 30. We have sacrificed a lot and we shall do so once again. We don’t need festivities. The lockdown should not be relaxed before May 30 at any cost. We request you to raise this demand before the Centre as well. The Muslim leadership will firmly stand by the government,” the Chief of the Bengal Imams’ Association Md. Yahiya wrote.
