India-China Border Standoff: US willing to mediate, tweets Donald Trump

US President: We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute.

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, offered to mediate between India and China over border standoff, saying US is “ready, willing and able to mediate” between the two sides.

Donald Trump took to twitter and said, “We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute. Thank you!”

US President’s comments came at a time of reports saying that the Indian and Chinese armies are locked in a standoff at few places along the Line of Actual Control. The standoff between the Indian and Chinese armies along the LAC, particularly in Ladakh sector, has been on for the last few weeks.

President Trump, who has in the past repeatedly offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir, made this latest offer through a tweet. It must be noted that US President Donald Trump has a history of making offers of mediation in issues involving India. Trump’s previous offers to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir were firmly rebuffed by New Delhi, making it clear that there was no role for any third party in bilateral issues.

However, in his tweet, Donald Trump did not specify when US had conveyed to Delhi and Beijing its willingness and ability to “mediate or arbitrate” between both the countries. It also could not be confirmed whether Washington had formally conveyed the offer to Delhi.

The Indian government has already made it clear that it would not allow any change in the status quo on the LAC and that it would respond to China’s actions with strength and restraint. Delhi has also rejected Chinese accusations of Indian troops crossing the LAC or obstructing Chinese patrols and has dismissed allegations that its troops trespassed across the LAC and instead accused Chinese troops of hindering activities on the Indian side of the LAC.
