Kolkata: Manipal Hospitals has always stood beside the patients whether it is about performing critical surgeries or attending the patients on time. Taking the trust of the patients on the Hospital one step further, Dr. Govind Nandakumar of Manipal Hospitals not only gave a new lease of life by performing a critical surgery on time but also built confidence in the patients and their families about the dedicated doctors and the services of the Manipal Hospitals.
A video of Dr. Govind Nandakumar, a Gastroenterology Surgeon at Manipal Hospitals, running on the Bengaluru roads had gone viral on social media. Recently, Dr. Govind Nandakumar was driving to perform a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery when he got stuck in traffic on the Bengaluru road.
After waiting for some time and seeing no movement in the traffic, Dr. Nandakumar thought he had waited enough and now he must do something. Realizing that delay could put his patient in danger, he left his car behind and ran the remaining 3 kilometers distance in 45 minutes to perform the crucial surgery, but on a normal day that distance would have taken him about 10 minutes by car.
Dr. Govind Nandakumar had to run to reach the premises on time for conducting the surgery. His team was ready with initial arrangements for the procedure and Dr. Nandakumar arrived on scheduled time to perform the laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Surgery was successful and the patient was discharged on time.
Dr. Govind Nandakumar, Consultant – Gastrointestinal Surgery, Manipal Hospitals, said, “I had to reach Hospital from Cunningham Road. That day I had to conduct a laparoscopy surgery and had to start on time as it was important for the patient and others who were awaiting treatment. Due to heavy rains and water-logging, there was a traffic pile up a few kilometers ahead of the hospital. It normally takes 30-45 minutes from my home to reach the hospital. On that day there was a traffic jam. When I checked on Google, it showed 45 minutes to cover the last stretch, which otherwise takes around 10 minutes.”
Dr. Govind Nandakumar said, “The traffic was not moving and I did not want to waste any more time waiting for the traffic to clear up so I decided to leave my car with my driver and run to the hospital because I did not want to keep my patients waiting for long. I ran three kms to hospital, and was in time for the surgery on that day but that this is not the first time I faced such a situation. I have had to make the journey on foot a few times in other areas of Bengaluru too. I was not anxious since our Hospital has adequate staff and infrastructure to take good care of a patient.”
