Washington: Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun along with the Indian envoy to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu inaugurated the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Washington on Thursday.

Dy. Secy of State Stephen Biegun joined Indian envoy to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu in paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at restored Mahatma Gandhi Plaza in front of Indian Embassy.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu took to twitter and said, “Thank you Secretary Biegun for joining us today in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. His ideals of peace and non-violence are a beacon of hope to face common challenges.”

The statue, situated at a park in Washington DC, was vandalised on June 3 during the George Floyd protests. It was desecrated by unruly elements amid the protests against the killing of George Floyd in the US. The United States Park Police had launched an investigation too in this matter.

The Trump campaign termed the incident “very disappointing”, while US Ambassador to India Ken Juster apologised, saying sorry to see the desecration of the Gandhi statue.
