Kolkata: BJP National President JP Nadda’s convoy was pelted with stones and bricks at several places allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters when he was on his way to Diamond Harbour, the Lok Sabha constituency of the Bengal Chief Minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and State President Dilip Ghosh and a few other BJP workers suffered injuries in the incident which triggered a war of words between the saffron party and the TMC. At least 15 vehicles of BJP leaders and security personnel were damaged in the attack.
While the BJP top brass demanded immediate and strict action against those involved in the attack, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sought to water-down the controversy and instead accused the BJP of vitiating the atmosphere of the state.
The BJP President, who arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday, left the city on Thursday morning for an outreach campaign in Diamond Harbour under the banner of Aar Noy Onnay (no more injustice) to share the Central Government’s success and the State Government’s failure.
The BJP President is on a two-day visit to the state since Wednesday to attend various programmes aimed at strengthening the party organisation ahead of the Assembly elections due in April-May next year.
